Cenk Uyugr on MSNBC shares a Reuters report that explains how Goldman Saches used billions in taxpayer money to give themselves bonuses rather than distributing the money to its clients, all of this while they recorded record profits.
Picture it: You are sound asleep next to your spouse. Your children are safely tucked away in their bedrooms. Despite the chaos in the world which surrounds you -- the riots, the food shortages, the deadly pandemic, the nationwide power outage, and the apparent societal collapse -- you are safe and comfortable in your house. Although the world has seemingly gone crazy, you are doing all you can to weather the storm and (for the moment) everything is quiet and peaceful...

The 25-Year 'Foreclosure From Hell'
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY, Fla. - Patsy Campbell could tell you a thing or two about fighting foreclosure. She's been fighting hers for 25 years.
The 71-year-old retired insurance saleswoman has been living in her house, a two-story on a half acre in a tidy middle-class neighborhood here in central Florida, since 1978. The last time she made a mortgage payment was October 1985.
Awesome story of a tough woman who won't bow down before the banks...
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Treasury Department said Thursday that it will shrink its supplementary financing program with the Federal Reserve to preserve its flexibility as the country nears the current debt ceiling.
I have also added a quick summary of all today's reported economic data...
Whenever I hear a a congress critter discussing deficit spending, the first thing I do is check their vote on the Iraq war to see if they are legitimately concerned about deficits, or not.
Residents of Discovery Bay, California will be the first in the country to be officially denied the right to use cash to pay for public services, in a move that echoes the Department of Homeland Security’s drive to depict those who use physical money as potential terrorists. As reported by the Contra Costa Times recently, from May onwards, residents will no long be allowed to pay water bills or purchase park permits after the Discovery Bay Community Services District board voted to ban cash transactions for all services.
The clowns-in-charge of the three-ring you work in know one thing - if the group confronts them - they are toast. They are chopped liver - finely chopped.
For the first time in human history almost all of humanity is politically activated, politically conscious and politically interactive... The resulting global political activism is generating a surge in the quest for personal dignity, cultural respect and economic opportunity in a world painfully scarred by memories of centuries-long alien colonial or imperial domination... The worldwide yearning for human dignity is the central challenge inherent in the phenomenon of global political awakening... That awakening is socially massive and politically radicalizing... The nearly universal access to radio, television and increasingly the Internet is creating a community of shared perceptions and envy that can be galvanized and channeled by demagogic political or religious passions.
Al Jazeera staff follow the latest developments in the deadly January 25 anti-government protests on Twitter.
“Without beating around the bush or postponing or playing us for fools and without more false promises, we, the people of Egypt, demand all of our long forgotten rights to be granted and this time there is no turning back … we have learned our lesson …we have finally broken free of all fears”
Prominent Egyptian opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei says he is ready to lead Egypt's protest movements with the aim of enabling a “peaceful transition” of power.
The former UN nuclear chief, who is widely viewed as an agent for democracy, travelled to Egypt from Vienna on Thursday to join current demonstrations against President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak's three-decade-long rule over the country, AFP reported.
"It is a critical time in the life of Egypt. I have come to participate with the Egyptian people," he said.
Hours after Egyptian police shot dead an anti-government activist, protesters have retaliated by firing three rockets, but there are no reports on any casualties, security officials said. The first rocket, which was fired at a police station in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, missed its target and hit a nearby medical center, officials said. The second rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) landed in an empty space, while the third hit a police station three kilometers (two miles) from the town, setting it on fire. The checkpoint had been evacuated earlier in the day.
London, Jan 27, IRNA – Amnesty International has condemned the crackdown on demonstrations in Egypt amid continuing protests against poverty, police abuse and corruption.
Amnesty’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa programme said that “reckless policing” has been witnessed “with the security forces relying on tear gas and using rubber bullet as a first resort.”
“We fear that the Ministry’s warning signals the authorities' readiness to unleash the full ferocity of the security forces with their track record of abuses” Sahraoui said after Egyptian authorities warned that the protests will not be tolerated.

The Internet is reportedly down in Cairo and across Egypt, with users denied both online access and SMS access. The shut off comes just hours before planned protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Egyptian protesters have been particularly effective at utilizing social media to organize and mobilize—this past Tuesday's protest was largely arranged via Twitter. State officials have yet to comment on the lack of service.
“People are scared,” Mansour says. While reports have circulated that Egyptian protesters were finding ways to get to blocked sites like Facebook or Twitter and setting up Tor protocols, “a lot of the circumvention tools and resources people have been developing were dependent on having some sort of internet exposure.” Mansour hears that sporadic cellphone outages have been spreading from protest-prone areas of Cairo and may go nationwide imminently. “The only way for transferring information is through Bluetooth,” he says.
Reports are emerging that Internet has gone down in Cairo and perhaps throughout Egypt, only hours before the largest planned protests yet.
According to a report from The Arabist, "Egypt has shut off the internet."
Thousands of Yemenis are demonstrating in the capital Sanaa calling for the president of the last three decades to leave office. The protesters are angry about rising poverty and lack of political reform. Webmaster's Commentary: That sounds vaguely familiar!
Among the many legal problems now being discovered with the foreclosure documents that banks have been using are false notarizations. The most typical variety of this problem occurs when a notary certifies that the person whose signature appears on a document really did sign it, even though the notary didn't witness the signing.
While such false notarizing is criminal, I've not yet heard of any notaries being charged. However, in Maryland, Steve Lash of The Daily Record reports that 18 current and former notaries have invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in a foreclosure case.
Vice President Joe Biden spoke to the PBS NewsHour tonight with the most direct US governent comments yet about the gathering Egypt protests against President Hosni Mubarak's 29-year reign. Mr. Biden's comments are unlikely to be well-received by regime opponents, as they fit a narrative of steadfast US support for a government they want to bring down.

cairo: Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, who reached in Egypt on Thursday to join demonstrators, called on President Hosni Mubarak to step down as the police fought protesters in two cities in eastern part of the country.
Mohamed ElBaradei, the former head of the UN nuclear watchdog turned Egyptian reform campaigner, said he expected big demonstrations across Egypt today (Friday), and that it was time for President Hosni Mubarak to go.

WASHINGTON — A top US lawmaker unveiled legislation on Wednesday to protect individuals who tip off authorities to potential extremist threats from lawsuits, in the event that they turn out to finger innocents. House Homeland Security Chairman Pete King introduced the "See Something, Say Something Act" as a shield for those "acting in good faith" and with "objectively reasonable suspicion" that a plot may be unfolding.
"Good citizens who report suspicious activity in good faith, should not have to worry about being sued," King, a Republican, said in a statement released by his office, citing "frivolous lawsuits" in 2007.
One of the Palestine Papers quotes an exasperated Erekat asking a US diplomat last year: “What more can I give?”
The man with the answer may be Lieberman, who unveiled his own map of Palestinian statehood this week. It conceded a provisional state on less than half of the West Bank.

A one-mile cordon has been established around a volcano on Mount Kirishima after it erupted scattering rocks and ash across southern Japan and sending smoke billowing 5,000ft into the air.
SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Tens of thousands of people called for the Yemeni president's ouster in protests across the country on Thursday inspired by the popular revolt in Tunisia.
The demonstrations led by opposition members and youth activists are a significant expansion of the unrest sparked by the Tunisian uprising, which also inspired Egypt's largest protests in years. They pose a new threat to the stability of the Arab world's most impoverished nation, which has become the focus of increased Western concern about a resurgent al-Qaida branch, a northern rebellion and a secessionist movement in the south.
Gilad Atzmon argues that more than anything, the leaked Palestine Papers show that Israel is not in the slightest bit interested in peace, and they demonstrate British deceitfulness and hypocrisy.
"...at the time that the British government was supposedly advocating 'democracy' in Palestine, the reality was quite different: British 'James Bonds' were investing enormous effort in trying to destroy the rising political power in Palestine. One may wonder: what kind of 'British interests' was MI6 serving in doing so?"

The last time she made a mortgage payment was October 1985. And yet Campbell has been able to keep her house, protected by a 105-pound pit bull named Dodger and a locked, rusty gate advising visitors to beware of the dog.
"They're not going to take this house," says Campbell. "I intend to stay in this house and maintain it as my residence until I die."

Despite what mainstream media calls a recovering economy, the reality is Americans are still losing their house to foreclosure. The foreclosure crisis is far from over and it is apparent as Main St. continues to struggle. Today in the Wall Street Journal, 400 rabbis from around the country took a stand on what they rightly see as unacceptable language on the nation's most widely watched "news" channel.
I have written extensively on this blog about the tweaking, “adjustment” and manipulation of the historic and present temperature “record” which are presented in the official figures. With the poor placement of stations (91 % of the stations are CRN 3 to 5 = bad to very poor); where they have purposely taken away the urban heat island effect, use huge smoothing radius, the historical “adjustment and tweaking” to cool the past etc.

Prominent opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei said he is willing to head a transitional government in Egypt if the public asked him to do so, regional news network al-Arabiya reported on Thursday. The statement comes as Egypt faces its third day of clashes between police and anti-government demonstrators calling for President Hosni Mubarak to step down.
ElBaradei, the former International Atomic Energy Agency chief turned Egyptian dissident, was expected to return to Cairo on Thursday from his residence in Vienna.

This is HUGE. Story broke late Wednesday night. Goldman's David Viniar caught lying to Congress and the truth about the AIG bailout is finally out.
A quick read...
Jerrold Nadler writes a very respectful letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking for a review of the Sholom Rubashkin case. But in the letter, Rep. Nadler makes several serious errors of fact that render most of his request moot and show once again that Rubashkin's legal and PR team are in effect lying to people like Rep. Nadler to get their support.
Fluoride works primarily via topical mechanisms to inhibit demineralization, to enhance remineralization, and to inhibit
bacteria associated with tooth decay (Featherstone, 2000). Fluoride has an affinity for calcified tissues.
High priority beverages which collectively contribute up to 80% of dietary fluoride consumed in the United States, including municipal (tap)/drinking and bottled waters, teas, carbonated beverages, beers, and ready-to drink juices and drinks were analyzed.
The distribution of fluoride does vary due to naturally occurring fluoride levels and local fluoridation practices.
When I heard that Putin had discounted Chechen responsibility for the Russian airport bombing, I thought, he knows it was Israel with their ICTS security that permitted and/or, planned the event. I thought that this might be that 'Israeli mistake' predicted by Clif High (the new ALTA report is out). I was very surprised to learn that they were there. It didn’t sound like Putin to allow ICTS into the country but… it could be I know very little about the man. I know what he did about the vampire oligarchs and I know they serve Israel because the western press is full of support and skewered details, concerning the oligarch that just got more prison time; his poor sainted mother, weeping in the courtroom for her blue-eyed boy.
