The Securities and Exchange Commission launched the new phase of its investigation by sending out a fresh round of subpoenas last week to big banks like Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Wells Fargo & Co, the sources said.

But this “strength” was illusory. Goldman repaid the TARP loans with funds it procured days earlier from the Federal Reserve. Then, over the ensuing months, Goldman recapitalized its balance sheet by selling tens of billions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities to the Fed. And the public never knew anything about these activities until two weeks ago, when the Fed was forced to reveal them....

Palestinian authorities on Thursday protested the resolution passed by the US congress on Wednesday condemning movement toward a unilateral declaration by Palestinians of a Palestinian state. The congressional resolution was actually fairly weak, showing the tensions between the US and the far rightwing government of Binyamin Netanyahu, since it did call for the establishment of a democratic Palestinian state, something Netanyahu privately opposes. Still, as usual, the US Congress is an outlier in world affairs on the Palestine issue, typically adopting stances that are often to the right of Israel’s own more liberal parties. Even Israeli military personnel have complained bitterly about having been dragooned into being a harsh occupying force in the West Bank.

In a nutshell, the House resolution against international recognition of a Palestinian state has come across not only as arrogant and dictatorial, but hypocritical in light of how it was US recognition for the proclaimed state of Israel that made it a reality. The rest of the world now correctly sees the US Government as a slave to Israel, which means the rest of the world now sees the US Government as illegitimate and irrelevant as a moral leader.
The appearance of a political opposition is the essential window dressing required to fool people into thinking that there’s actually more than one side that will be heard on any public issue. There isn’t. The ultimate winners are the great accumulations of wealth represented by that bipartisan coalition that has no permanent friends or enemies, just permanent interests – The Money Party.
Webmaster's Commentary: Russia is really behaving in a very nuanced, responsible manner by making this request. It is obvious that Russian leadership clearly understands how volatile this situation is, and is making the logical case for restraint, caution. and calm.
One has to wonder, however, what "suggestions" the South Korean leadership, both military and political, are getting from the US regarding this upcoming live fire drill.
The ability of the Israel lobby to pass a resolution before the text of it is even officially made public undoubtedly reflects its still-considerable power. However, the way in which the resolution was debated and voted upon demonstrates that all is not well in the fairy tale world of Israel’s supporters on Capitol Hill.

Last fall, as he had done hundreds of times, Iranian-American businessman Farid Seif passed through security at a Houston airport and boarded an international flight.
He didn't realize he had forgotten to remove the loaded snub nose "baby" Glock pistol from his computer bag. But TSA officers never noticed as his bag glided along the belt and was x-rayed. When he got to his hotel after the three-hour flight, he was shocked to discover the gun traveled unnoticed from Houston.
"It's just impossible to miss it, you know. I mean, this is not a small gun," Seif told ABC News. "How can you miss it? You cannot miss it."

This is absolute roof positive that all the groping and scanning are not making passengers any more safe than before these procedures were instituted.
The new procedures are in place to achieve three outcomes: 1. To make millions of dollars for Michael Chertoff and the companies which make the full body scanners, and
2. To cow the American people into sheepishly submitting to any indignity the Federal government wishes to impose upon them.
3. To, for all practical intents and purposes, obliterate the protection of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution against unreasonable search and seizure.
“The answer appears to be a secret deal struck between WikiLeaks’ … Assange … with Israeli officials, which ensured that all such documents were ‘removed’ before the rest were made public,” wrote Gordon Duff, an editor of the anti-war website Veterans Today, who frequently opines about what he believes is Israeli’s secret influence over world events. These words have a very profound significance, coming from a guy who was shot and paralyzed by Israeli special forces in 1991.
His response to that incident could have been far, far different; yet what he chose, and continues to choose, is to work for peace and social justice through non-violence for Palestinians: his work has my absolute respect.
A recent article remembered Chalmers Johnson, best known for calling America's global wars and imperialism a "suicide option" unless reversed.

Overstock.com Inc (OSTK.O) plans to amend a lawsuit it filed in early 2007 to include racketeering claims against Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch, the online retailer said on Thursday.
The original lawsuit, filed in the California superior court in San Francisco, alleged that Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Bank of America's Merrill Lynch unit (BAC.N) engaged in a "massive, illegal stock market manipulation scheme" that involved so-called naked short-selling. The Obama Administration's effort to obtain your location from cell phone towers without a warrant was rebuffed Wednesday by a federal court. The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that the Justice Department cannot obtain information about which cell phone towers mobile phones communicate with without a warrant.
