Japan’s nuclear crisis verged toward catastrophe on Tuesday after an explosion damaged the vessel containing the nuclear core at one reactor and a fire at another spewed large amounts of radioactive material into the air, according to the statements of Japanese government and industry officials. In a brief address to the nation at 11 a.m. Tokyo time, Prime Minister Naoto Kan pleaded for calm, but warned that radiation had already spread from the crippled reactors and there was “a very high risk” of further leakage.
GE, the company that boasts that it “brings good things to life,” was the designer of the nuclear plants that are blowing up like hot popcorn kernels at the Fukushima Dai-ichi generating plant north of Tokyo that was hit by the double-whammy of an 9.1 earthquake and a huge tsunami.
The news keeps repeating that this is a Hydrogen explosion. But Hydrogen, when it burns, burns with a clear blue flame, almost invisible. Note the orange flash at the moment of the blast. Hydrogen, when it burns, produces water vapor, or steam. The combustion products emerging from the ruined reactor do not look like a steam blast. Burning hydrogen is not high-velocity, so pulverized concrete does not account for the color. As a side note, burned Plutonium, Pu4+, is yellow brown.
The General Electric-designed nuclear reactors involved in the Japanese emergency are very similar to 23 reactors in use in the United States, according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission records.
The NRC database of nuclear power plants shows that 23 of the 104 nuclear plants in the U.S. are GE boiling-water reactors with GE's Mark I systems for containing radioactivity, the same containment system used by the reactors in trouble at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. The U.S. reactors are in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Vermont.

Breaking news - A fire has broken out at a fourth nuclear reactor in Japan at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant, and additional radiation is being released, according to MSNBC news sources. It is unclear what caused the fire, but scientists believe that escaping hydrogen ignited the fire. Efforts to keep the reactor temperature under control by flooding with sea water have not been completely successful, and a portion of the rods inside the reactor core are now exposed and melting.

NHK reports: The sound of a blast was heard Tuesday morning at the troubled No. 2 reactor of the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the government said.
The incident occurred at 6:10 a.m. and is feared to have damaged the reactor's pressure-suppression system, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said, citing a report from the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.
There was no immediate word on exact damage from the third blast, which tore through the unit 2 structure.
The latest blast occurred after cooling water dropped repeatedly in unit 2, with the nuclear fuel rods partially exposed - risking an overheat of up to a temperature of 2,200 degrees Celsius.

Update: 2:49pm PST – Russia Today is reporting that radiation levels near the Fukushima nuclear plant are RISING.
Japanese officials have upgraded the nuclear alert level to a level 5 incident meaning that large quantities of radioactive material have been released and there is a high probability of significant public exposure.
The alert level was raised after the nuclear fuel rods became completely exposed and the nuclear reactor completely lost its cooling ability.
The size of the evacuation area has been expanded from a 20 KM radius to a 40 KM radius (about 25 miles) with the nuclear alert level upgrade.
The upgraded alert level comes on news that wind has carried the radioactive cloud 100 miles north of the reactor.

Three Metropolitan Police officers are under investigation after they were alleged to have inadvertently recorded themselves arranging to falsely arrest a protester during the student fees demonstrations.
The officers, who have not been named, are alleged to have conspired to arrest a 20-year-old man who had broken through the police cordon during the protests at Parliament Square in December.
The man was chased and caught and, it is alleged, was then struck in the face with a police riot shield which chipped his tooth.

A new analysis of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan has found that the intense temblor has accelerated Earth's spin, shortening the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds, according to geophysicist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
The Fukushima I and Fukushima 3 nuclear reactors have both previously experienced explosions, and are in some stage of meltdown.

That means there is a risk that molten nuclear fuel can melt through the reactor's safety barriers and cause a serious radiation leak.
There have already been explosions inside two over-heating reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, and the fuel rods inside a third were partially exposed as engineers desperately fight to keep them under control after the tsunami knocked out emergency cooling systems.
Japanese chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano said it was 'highly likely' that the fuel rods inside all three stricken reactors are melting.

We are hearing about things like MOX fuel which is supposed to be two million times worse than uranium or what got loose at Chernobyl. The report referred to the Fukushima Daiichi complex's No.2 reactor, where levels of water coolant around the reactor core had been reported as falling earlier in the day.
The Jiji report said a meltdown of the fuel rods could not be ruled out.

A four-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn today charging Lin Mun Poo, a resident and citizen of Malaysia, with hacking into a computer network of the Federal Reserve Bank and possessing more than 400,000 stolen credit and debit card numbers.1 The defendant was arrested on a criminal complaint shortly after his arrival in the United States on October 21, 2010, and has been held in custody since then. The case has been assigned to United States District Judge Dora L. Irizarry.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A number of Japanese companies including NEC Corp. and Suzuki Motor Corp. joined others Sunday in announcing a temporary suspension of their domestic plants following Friday's massive earthquake in northeastern and eastern Japan, company officials said.
While some of their plants were hit by the quake and quake-triggered tsunami, many factories will be unable to operate due to a lack of parts and the need for inspection. A scheduled power outage could also halt operations at some plants, possibly affecting output of various products.
Among automakers, Hino Motors Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and Isuzu Motors Ltd. have decided to temporarily suspend their domestic plants, officials of the companies said.

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A suicide bomber blew up his booby-trapped car early Monday outside an Iraqi army battalion headquarters in the country's east, killing 10 soldiers and wounding 29 people in a bombing that brought down the building.
SEOUL -- The U.S. 7th Fleet has moved its ships and aircraft away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant in Japan after low levels of contamination were detected in the air and found on the crews of three helicopters returning from disaster relief missions near Sendai.
The contamination found on the 17 crewmembers was easily removed by washing with soap and water, and the ship and aircraft move is only temporary, according to a 7th Fleet release.
WASHINGTON — American Navy officials in Japan said early Monday that 17 military personnel who had been aboard three helicopters assisting in the earthquake relief effort had been exposed to low levels of contamination. Cmdr. Jeff A. Davis, a spokesman for the American Seventh Fleet in Japan, said the Navy personnel — who apparently had flown through a radioactive plume from a damaged nuclear power plant — had been ordered to dispose of their uniforms and to undergo a decontamination scrub that had successfully removed radioactive particles.
“They received very, very low levels of contamination,” Commander Davis said in a telephone interview from Japan early Monday.
Fukushima reactor No. 2 is now down for the count as the fuel rods are now exposed according to the news source Jiji who had quoted the plant operator.
A meltdown assumed imminent at this point.
Nuclear fallout is in the air. Seawater is being pumped into the reactor in a last ditch effort to prolong the situation.

The explosive power of the tsunami that hit Japan on Friday was captured in this dramatic amateur video footage.
It shows ships being washed onto a highway as the huge surge of water breaches a sea wall in Miyako City, north east Japan. Cars and buildings are also effortlessly swept away as the tsunami turns the streets into a torrent of debris-strewn water in seconds.
Cars can still be seen driving over a motorway overpass as the highway below is engulfed by the tsunami. Several ships are carried up the bay, over the sea wall and crash into the pillar of the motorway overpass.
As the torrent continues, buildings are swept along what were city centre streets just minutes earlier. Piles of cars are also washed against buildings, as the water brings down power lines.
Professor Collignon from the Australian National University (ANU) says the new research will only heighten sensitivities.
"What was a bit surprising when we looked at some of the data from Canada and Hong Kong in the last year is that people who have been vaccinated in 2008 with the seasonal or ordinary vaccine seemed to have twice the risk of getting swine flu compared to the people who hadn't received that vaccine," he said.

The Unit 1 reactor container is not cracked despite the explosion that destroyed its building.
The explosion did not erupt out of the reactor.
So what caused the explosion that blasted away the reinforced concrete roof and walls? Silence.
